Cloud Stair / Vertical Sequence
UC Berkeley | Fall 2012
Instructor: Keith Plymale

Location: Potrero Hill, San Francisco

As a precursor to the Potrero Hill Library redesign project, this public stair provides access to the back of the existing library from an adjacent street. A topographic site analysis of the Potrero Hill neighborhood revealed a radical native topography, interrupted and adapted by the rational gradation of the street grid. The stair is is interpreted as a synthesis of two systems in dialogue: a rational, linear pathway and a surrounding curvilinear cloud-like form. The stratification of the organic form mimics topographic representation and amends a horizontal porosity to the act of ascending.
